CCU Community Remembers Fallen Lakewood Police Officer
Colorado Christian University joins the community of Lakewood in mourning the death of Lakewood police officer James Davies, killed early Friday morning. Responding to a call of shots fired, Davies was mistaken for an assailant by fellow Lakewood officer Devaney Braley and shot.
"It's one of those tragic, tragic things that can happen," said Dean of Spiritual Formation Joe Walters. "We have a great relationship with the Lakewood Police Department. It's like they are part of our family. They serve in the café, at special events, and are often on campus." On Thursday, Davies had spent lunch at the dining hall to provide security.
He is survived by his wife, Tamara, daughter, Chloe, and son, Ethan. Davies was 35.
"Officer Davies is remembered by friends here at CCU with great appreciation and admiration," noted President Bill Armstrong. "This tragic event is a reminder of the debt of gratitude all citizens of Lakewood owe to those who serve and protect the public as law enforcement officers, often risking their own safety to protect us."
CCU took time to remember their debt of gratitude -- and, especially, to pray for the Davies family -- during their chapel time on Tuesday. Vice President for Student Life Jim McCormick led the student body in prayer after a time of silence, praying for comfort for the family and for Officer Braley. He also offered hopes that the mourning will be followed quickly by celebration: for the life Davies lived and the service he provided.
At the chapel service, Joe Walters shared his conversation with another police officer on Friday, following the shooting. "We love coming here," the officer said. "CCU is like an island we come to." Davies spent many hours at CCU, both during lunches at watching students enjoy special events.
Davies had volunteered to work the overnight shift late Thursday when the department needed an extra officer. The shooting marks the first time a Lakewood police officer has been killed in the line of fire.
The funeral for Officer Davies is set for Thursday and the procession will pass CCU's main entrance as it travels through the streets where Davies served. The family is accepting donations through Foothills Credit Union: 720-962-8200.
