His Love

Jesus left Heaven to take on human flesh, consciously limiting Himself for us. He endured scorn, ridicule, betrayal, brutal torture, and execution on a cross. Though innocent of sin or any wrongdoing, He chose to give His life as an atoning sacrifice for sinners, bridging the separation between a God and sinful humanity.

Christ's unconditional love for us still shines as a beacon of hope and salvation. This divine love, etched into the history of mankind on the cross at Calvary, defies human understanding. Jesus, the embodiment of purity and sinlessness, embraced excruciating suffering and death, not as a martyr lacking choice, but as a redeemer paving the path to reconciliation. His crucifixion is the ultimate demonstration of love – an inclusive, unwavering, and transformative love.

Romans 5:8 proclaims this truth with piercing clarity, stating, “But God demonstrates his love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The essence of this passage is profound; while we are flawed and undeserving, Christ's sacrificial love envelopes us. As it says in Romans 5:6: “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for us, the ungodly.”

True Meaning of Love

How often do we confuse love with earthly things?

Jesus didn’t come to earth to conquer. It wasn’t about an army, a throne, or glory. It was about removing the barrier of sin that was keeping us from the Father and giving us an example of how we ought to treat each other.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you,” Jesus said in 1 John 15. “Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. … My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”

We did not deserve or initiate Jesus’s costly display of love. God chose to demonstrate his love toward us in this manner. Love drove him to pay the ultimate price for our redemption.

The Ultimate Example

Jesus perfectly lived out the two greatest commandments: to wholeheartedly love God and to selflessly love others. After enjoying fellowship with our Heavenly Father, He stepped into this broken world on a rescue mission. Though rejected by the very ones He came to save – He forgave. Though facing injustice and cruelty– He endured. Though blameless – He took our sins upon Himself to reconcile us to God.

Christ set the ultimate example of love. As 1 John 3:16 states, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” This may not mean giving up our lives, but it does mean sacrificing for the good of others. It means extending grace when wronged. It means offering forgiveness when it seems impossible. It means initiating love rather than just responding in kind.

In practical terms, this implies living with boundless generosity, not just from our surplus but with a readiness to share even from our scarcity. In this way, we not only show our commitment to the gospel and the teachings of Christ, but we also create ripples of love that can heal a fractured world.

Remember that love doesn’t come with a schedule or time frame. “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8)
