CCU Students Get Involved in the Global Community
Sixty students and staff members from Colorado Christian University will spend their upcoming spring break getting involved in communities across the nation and abroad. A part of the University's ongoing "CCU2theWorld" short-term missions program, this year's six spring break teams will serve in Louisiana, Montana, Utah, Nicaragua, and Scotland from March 22 to April 1, 2007.
The Montana team (with Forward Edge International) is headed to the Crow Indian Reservation located east of Billings; the Louisiana team will join Samaritan's Purse in New Orleans toward continued recovery efforts along the ravaged Gulf Coast; the Utah team will travel to Salt Lake City to spend time at local churches and Brigham Young University; and the Scotland team has paired with the Church of Scotland-Lenzie to work alongside a local parish serving in the church and in public schools. Among other things, CCU hopes to build local relationships through construction projects, activities for children and the elderly, interaction with people from other religious traditions, and providing education and vocational training to those living in underprivileged circumstances.
"I am going on this trip because I see it as an active way to serve the Lord," said Lisa Jaarsma, a sophomore member of the New Orleans team. "I can't fix the whole problem -- but by making the effort, I will be able to have some effect."
Two teams are also going to Nicaragua. Several members of the men's soccer team will join the ministry of the Casa Unida Foundation north of Managua, where they will construct a new school facility and organize soccer competitions for residents and youth. The other CCU group will assist nearby Project Chacocente in support of families attempting to escape the poverty cycle.
Faith is part of the educational experience at CCU, both in and outside of the classroom. Each year, CCU2theWorld sends teams all over the globe to serve others and share God's love. Previous destinations have included India, Europe, Australia, the Middle East, Central America, Japan, Thailand, Mexico, and various cities within the United States.
"CCU alumni are making a great impact for Christ around the world," stated CCU Director of Student Missions David Bosworth. "Nothing is more exciting to me than seeing students apply their missions experiences as they make decisions about career paths and how they will spend the rest of their lives."
Distinguished Scholar in Residence Dr. Larry Crabb has also commented, "After seeing what is happening in the lives of our students, I deeply believe CCU offers not only a Christian college environment, but also a richly Christ-centered education that speaks into the hearts and souls of young people."
