A Rare Window to China: CCU to Host Photo Exhibit Fall Semester
Beginning this summer, Colorado Christian University (CCU) will host "China: The Other Side," an exhibit of images by photographer Cheryl Opperman of Littleton, Colorado. The exhibit will be open for public viewing from August 18 to December 15, 2008, in the Clifton Fowler Library at CCU's main campus in Lakewood. A meet-the-artist reception will take place at the library on Friday, August 22, 7:00 p.m., and a slideshow will be presented in CCU's Music Center on Wednesday, November 5, 7:00 p.m.
"China: The Other Side" offers viewers a moving encounter with the beauty of China's rural landscape and the warmth of its people. The exhibit includes over 20 vivid images that chronicle Opperman's five-week journey through the villages of South China, documenting life along the rivers and among native people in remote villages with no running water, showing a lifestyle not often seen by the Western world.
Opperman's opportunity to shoot in China arose when she won the grand prize trip to Hong Kong from the Ultimate Image of Earth international contest for Earth Day 2000. Her body of work employs the power of photography to inspire public interest in environmental issues and other cultures. Opperman's images have been displayed in solo and group exhibitions across the country, including at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.
