CCU Adds Varsity Track Program
Colorado Christian University Athletic Director Darren Richie has announced the addition of Men's and Women's Track for the 2014-15 school year. The sports will compete in NCAA and NCCAA events in the spring of 2015.
The news thrills Cougar running fans, who have been advocating for the addition of track for several years.
"We've had tremendous excitement regarding the addition of men's and women's track programs for a while now," remarked Richie this week. "That we can make those hopes a reality now is great. Our runners are thrilled, our parents are thrilled, our staff is thrilled. It's a win every way you look at it."
The squads will be coached by CCU Cross Country coach Joshua Coon.
"I am looking forward to helping guide CCU into this new chapter," expressed Coon on Monday. "Tremendous thanks go out to Darren Richie and Vice President Jim McCormick for their support in our programs and our growth."
Though firm rosters and schedules are far from completion, Coon will spend the remainder of the summer wrapping up plans for the outdoor track squads, who will focus on distance events (400 meters and up). The Cougar runners will not compete in jumps, hurdles, or throws. CCU will look to host meets at the newly renovated Jefferson County Stadium at 6th Avenue and Kipling in Lakewood.
"We will continue to grow and improve, and this addition will only aid in that process. The RMAC is deep and competitive, and we are excited to compete against the best in the spring just like we do in the fall."
