CCU Presents Scripture Memory Scholarship
Colorado Christian University will be offering a new Scripture Memory Scholarship for the 2015-16 school year. The scholarship is meant to encourage and reward memorization of the Bible, and it will offer varying amounts of tuition or room and board credit to students who memorize books of the Bible. A generous donor who serves on CCU's board of trustees inspired the concept.
We're thrilled to roll out the new Scripture Memorization Scholarship, said Paul Eldridge, vice president of Development for CCU. In this day, when technology makes scripture readily accessible, this scholarship allows us to support the continued merits of memorization, which helps people deeply know and live out Scripture rather than possess cursory knowledge of it.
The new scholarship furthers CCU's embodiment of its strategic objectives specifically the second objective, which reads Teach students to trust the Bible, live holy lives, and be evangelists. One of the goals of scripture memorization is to value the teachings and stories of the Bible and make those stories so readily accessible that it's easy to see how they apply to everyday situations.
Scripture memory is a great way for our students to inscribe upon their lives this important book and its many precepts for the Christian life, said Jim McCormick, vice president for Student Development. Once memorized, it will be a lifetime resource at their immediate disposal. Our students are already figuring out that they can forgo work this summer, spend their summer time on memory verses, and make more money through that for their CCU education than they could doing a regular job.
Currently, the Scholarship Advisory Committee has approved eight books for memorization, assigning each a scholarship monetary value. People who memorize longer books, such as Acts, can earn $4,500. Paul's letter to the Ephesians, a shorter book, merits a $600 scholarship.
Students can also memorize books that aren't yet approved by the Scholarship Advisory Committee. The student simply needs to submit a book for pre-approval, and the committee will determine a corresponding scholarship amount. To verify the scholarship, all students must recite the entire book to at least two witnesses and deliver up to half-an-hour of recitation before the scholarship committee.
The Scripture Memorization Scholarships are one-time scholarships (not recurring yearly) available to all College of Undergraduate Studies (traditional) students. For more information, please visit www.ccu.edu/scripturememory.
