Dr. Woodbridge, Church Historian, to Receive Honorary Doctorate
Dr. John Woodbridge, a world-renowned authority in church history, will address faculty, staff, and students at Colorado Christian University's (CCU) Chapel service on Thursday, October 12 at 10:50 a.m. in the CCU Event Center. Celebrating his commitment to Christian education, CCU will award Dr. Woodbridge an Honorary Doctorate in Divinity during the service.
"For many decades Dr. John Woodbridge has been a renowned church historian, prolific author, extraordinary teacher, mentor to up-and-coming scholars, and an important spokesman for American evangelicals," said Dr. Sweeting, president of CCU. "It is a great honor to have him on our campus."
Dr. John Woodbridge is the Research Professor of Church History and the History of Christian Thought at Trinity International University. He earned a B.A. from Wheaton College, an M.A. from Michigan State University, an M. Div. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and a Doctorat de Troisieme Cycle from the Universite de Toulouse, France. He speaks fluent French.
Dr. Woodbridge has been faithfully teaching for 50 years primarily at Trinity, but also at the University of Toulouse, Northwestern University, and Hautes Etudes, Sorbonne, France. His areas of expertise include Evangelicalism, Fundamentalism, the history of the Bible's authority, the French enlightenment, the French Huguenots, and the origins of higher criticism.
Woodbridge has written, co-written, or edited many books on the history of the church: A God-Sized Vision: Revival Stories that Stretch and Stir, Church History from Pre-Reformation to the Present Day, Great Leaders in the Christian Church, Ambassadors for Christ, More than Conquerors, Renewing Your Mind in a Secular World, A God Sized Vision, The Marks of Jesus, and more. Dr. Woodbridge has received four Gold Medallion Awards for his works related to Christian history and biography. He has also served as a senior editor for Christianity Today and published academic articles and books in Europe.
A strong defender of inerrancy and Biblical authority, Woodbridge has collaborated with D.A. Carson on hermeneutics, authority, canon, Scripture, and truth. He also worked closely in an ecumenical effort with Chuck Colson called "Evangelicals and Catholics Together."
