CCU Nursing Student Prepares for Once-in-a-Lifetime Internship Experience
This summer, Eden Higginbottom, a nursing student at Colorado Christian University (CCU) will join Samaritan Purse on a remarkable journey to impact the world in a tangible way. Higginbottom will spend two months in Kenya, where she help meet the needs of the community on both a physical and spiritual level.
The Global Internship Program at Samaritan's Purse invites college students and recent graduates from various colleges and programs to join in their mission to bring relief and hope to those hurting around the globe. For this round of applications, only two nursing students were chosen from the pool of applicants, Eden being one of them.
During her time in Kenya, Eden will have the opportunity to develop her skills, serving alongside medical professionals at the Chogoria Hospital. In addition, her team will also join local missionaries on their mission to reach the people of Kenya with the gospel message.
"I was overwhelmed with gratitude and joy when I opened the acceptance letter," said Higginbottom. "I've always felt drawn to missions, and my time at CCU has only confirmed this calling."
CCU provides students with a Christ-centered education, that aims to mold them into people of truth and grace. Eden notes that the University and its nursing program has played an essential role in her development as a young professional and as a person of faith.
"We teach nursing as ministry," said Dr. Barbara White, Professor and Dean for the School of Nursing and Health Professions at CCU. "Our faculty understands that nursing is a scientific discipline and a sacred calling. Therefore, nursing is more than just an art. It is truly the hands and feet of Jesus, and we teach this from day one."
"As nurses, we are called to meet not only the physical needs, but also the spiritual needs of each patient," added Higginbottom. "The nursing program has prepared me in terms of nursing skills, but it has also taught me how to make an impact on God's Kingdom."This year, Eden was awarded The Nursing Endowed Scholarship and The Ivy Women's Scholarship from CCU. She also received The Donald Pollard Memorial Scholarship from Friends of Nursing.
"Eden is an exceptional student," said Dr. White. "She is extremely gifted, as well as mature in her faith for a young woman her age. God has great things in store for Eden."
